TRAILER: Recording Day 3

Today me and my partner Anika stayed after school in order to complete our radio trailer and make some modifications to the previous version we created in our second recording day.

One of the major changes we had to make was to re-record the dialogue from our movie, used in our trailer, since the audio wasn't clear enough because of the noise in the background. In order to do this we had to schedule this recording session according to the times our main actress was available. Unfortunately the actor whose voice is also heard in the trailer could not make it because as an external student, he wasn't  able to come when the studio was available to us.

An additional change we made was to apply the sound effects I found on the incompetech website, onto our trailer. Previously the radio trailer only had one background track and a few sound effects, so I decided to find other royalty free sounds in order to make my trailer sound more interesting and intense.

Another change we made was to add silence after the character says:"dead!", so that the echo applied to that word can be heard slowly fading away and act as a smooth transition between one sound track to the other. In addition to this, this silence also offers the audience a tension reliever, a calm before the storm.

Besides finishing off our radio trailer, we also used this opportunity to re-record the dialogue from the last scene in the movie. We needed to record this lines again because they turned out too quite as a result of us not turning on the correct microphone. This resulted in the scene losing some of its impact, which is very important especially since it is at the end of the film. In addition to this the lines pun the name of the character. Her surname is lucky and the killer asks her if she is feeling lucky before killing her, causing it to seem ironic.

Our Thoughts On Arriving to the Final Stages of Our Film

In this video me and my partner Anika talk about the things we think went well and the things that we could improve on in regards to our film project.
A small list we made of things we could talk about in the video.

LIVE EVIL: The Tag-line

In total I came up with four different tag-lines for my movie. As partners me and Anika narrowed it down to only two, discarding the rest which were 'when life imitates art' and 'Keep your friends close but your enemies closer'.

Both of the tag-lines we decided on, in my opinion have their own positive aspects for example:
  • Death is amongst us: This tag-line is short and snappy which allows it to be easy to remember. It also reflects what happens in the film since the killer is somebody that has always been around the victims, causing her to be somebody that nobody would suspect of. However in our film, the killer is never really seen amongst the victims, the audience is only given hints that they are friends and hang out together. This could cause the tag-line to serve as a warning for the audience and making them a part of 'us' instead.
  • Keep your enemies away, but your friends even further: Unlike the previous tag-line this one directly addresses the cause of
    disequilibrium
within the film, since it hints at the possible role the main character's friend might play in the movie. An additional positive aspect
of this tag-line is that it gives a clever twist to the proverb "keep your friends close but your enemies even closer", it's meaning is transformed in order to make it more relevant to my film.

So far we haven't made up our minds on which one to choose, but the second option currently stands out the most for us.
We will decided on which one to use after we hear how they sound on our trailer.

TRAILER: Initial Idea for the Trailer Script

KEY:  Movie extract        Voiceover          Sound effect
Beginning Version 1:
When a DVD of a film/a package arrives at her door,(sound of DVD passing through the letter box) from an unknown sender, Rebecca Lucky discovers that this was no ordinary DVD.....
This film was more than just a movie......
...It was her life sentence.
“What do you think is going to happen- they’re dead!” - Bob (followed by a scary sound effect associated with the killer in the movie)
Beginning Version 2:
There was a knock on the door (knock)
Nothing but a DVD was found (wind blows)
But Rebecca Lucky discovers that this was no ordinary DVD.....
"Oh no, oh no" - Rebecca
"Bob where are you" - Rebecca (dull thud)
"Kevin comeback" - Rebecca (foot steps)
This film was more than just a movie......
“What do you think is going to happen-they're dead!” - Bob (followed by a scary sound effect associated with the killer in the movie)
“It’s not funny where are you” - Rebecca
...it was here life sentence. (eerie music)
But is running really enough when your lost and alone (scary ambient sound in the background)
"Where’s Amber she’s supposed to be here?" - Rebecca
"Rebecca are you feeling lucky?" - Amber
"Ahhhhhhh!" - Rebecca .......(silence)
So.. do YOU feel lucky... in cinemas Friday the 13th of July....[name of film said in a scary way] [Tag-line]

This is the initial script that me and my partner Anika put together. We decided to incorporate a lot of dialogue from the movie in order to allow characters in the film to tell the story and mirror what the narrator is saying. Additionally we wanted to provide the viewer with a more intense experience when listening to the trailer and allow them to create an image of what is going on using the sound extracts from the film.

Final Filming Day in the Cemetery

Me and Ms Whipp after the filming was finished.
Today was our  final filming day for Live Evil in the cemetery. I'm sad that it's almost done since we are having so much fun filming the scenes, but I'm glad everything worked out without any problems and that I was able to quickly come up with a new ending allowing us to continue filming today as planned.
As a result of changes to the story, I had to become the villain, which was something I was a bit nervous about since my acting skills have room for improvement. But I'm glad the shots came out alright from what I saw in the camera. Overall this experience was really fun, I enjoyed playing a character which was nothing like me, it was fun pretending to drag Rebecca on the floor, hit her on the head with a flashlight and hide in the woods behind gravestones and slightly scary too.

Me getting ready for my scenes.
But I have to admit that filming there for more than 1 hour caused us to stay there when it was slightly darker than planned and consequently some of the people we encountered there were slightly strange for example there was a guy that came past us three times which made our lead actress feel a little uneasy.
However the ambient sound was great, we managed to record the sounds of crows, the crushing of leaves, the wind whistling and airplanes flying.

Last but not least I'm really glad we chose Ms Whipp as our main actress, she really grasped Rebecca's character and her feelings, over all her acting was fantastic especially the scream she did during the dragging scene.

_______________________________________________________________________

Today was probably one of the most important filming days so far since we would finally be filming the highlight of our movie, the most important and scariest scene- the dragging scene. This scene needed to work out no matter what, so we gave extra detail to props and equipment.
Preparing for the dragging scene.
One of the ways we did this was by getting me to bring black plastic bin bags to place on the floor where the actress would lie on. We did this in order to allow the actress to slide easily while I dragged her and prevent the actress's clothes from getting ruined. Judging from the footage we saw on the camera after recording, the plastic bags could be clearly seen, but since that couldn't be helped we decided that this rather than being a problem, added extra creepiness to the screen, by suggesting that those bags had been placed there by Amber because she might be using them to hide the body later on.

The final killing scene also took place today. We used fake blood in order to add realism into our film and make it look as if I really did hit Rebecca with a flashlight, since the action wasn't shown.

Second Filming Day

Today was our second filming day.
Me filming
Actress in position
Me filming
We didn`t have much time to film and only our main character could make it. This meant that I needed to make the most of the time we had and decided to film the scenes where only the main character acted in.
However since we couldn`t film scenes that involved the main character interacting with other charcaters, I decided to film the different angles of her walking through the street, in order to get some filming done.

Luckily we were able to finish all the walking scenes for our movie, without encountering any problems.

Letter to Parents of Actresses

As a result of our next filming day taking place during the weekend, our actresses asked if we could write a letter for them to give to their parents informing them about what we would be doing, where it would take place and for how long it would last. After hearing this me and Anika each wrote a section of the letter, I did the first half in addition to the customizing then Anika wrote the second half after checking through mine. After we had finished writing it we printed out the letter and handed them out to the actresses several days in advance.

Making the Opening Title for our Film

After it was exported.
Creating the 'Presents' animation.
Creating the 'Live Evil' animation.
After exporting the final version.
When making our film title we decided to split the film and company name between ourselves in order to speed up the making process.
I was given the task of creating the animation for film title `Live Evil` as well as the `presents` while my partner Anika was responsible for creating the animations for the film company name.

In order to create these titles I had to use a software I was previously unfamiliar with, Live Type, Luckily the software was very user friendly, which meant that I learned to use it quickly without any problems.
I really enjoyed using this software as it provided a range of effects and fonts which I could play around with before finally finding the one which best fit the image of my film.
Adding a mirror affect onto
the 'Live Evil' animation

After creating and exporting both of my files, I opened a new program called iMovie.
Here I imported all of the files including Anika's 'Pandora Pictures', in order to place them, starting with the film company and ending with the film name.
This program provided me with new features that I could use on the opening title, such as background music and sound effects.
I decided to apply a different background song to each of the animation in order to add individuality to them and make sure that they each have a song that matches their transition. For example the song used for the company name mirrors the movement it makes and ends with a 'bam!' to illustrate that the full name is shown and that it's the end of that animation.
Exporting the finished opening title.
The presents has a more mysterious sound that mimics the way it slowly creeps into the screen. Half way through the presents I also added the sound of foot steps to match the pace the blue shadow appears in. This foots steps continue into the film title to represent the movement from one animation to the other.
The finished opening title.
Finally the I decided to apply an unusual background sound to the film title, the sound of a volcano erupting. I chose this sound because it matches well with the movement of the font, its shaky and unsettle like the animation.

In addition to the sounds I also added a mirror effect to the film title in order to take advantage of the fact that 'Evil' is 'Live' backwards. Adding this effect means that the public will have to read the letters backwards because of the distorted image, which shows that something isn't quite right and mirrors the film itself.

This is the final finished film opening title.

Creating the Newspaper

The newspaper for the opening scene of my film, is a very important aspect of the story, since it allows the film to follow the Enigma code theory and capture the viewers' interest right from the start. In order for this to work it is important that we create a realistic looking newspaper article, which is why we have used this website to create it: http://www.fodey.com/generators/newspaper/snippet.asp
When writting the article, we found that it would be best if we each wrote half of the story. This way we would both have contributed to making the newspaper.
I wrote the first part:
Three teenagers have been found dead after allegedly watching a homemade horror film. Witnesses claim that all three victims had previously received a DVD from an anonymous source.

In the process of creating the newspaper
“It’s not just video games anymore, people have now began to turn film fiction into reality”- Ms Begum, 37, expressed her suspicious over the motive behind the murder of her daughter.”It’s too early into the investigation process to determine whether these murders are closely linked to the Hollywood film “The Ring”- Police officer Paul.

And my partner Anika wrote the second part:

Chris Taiwan, Kevin Reed and Amber Begum´s body was found at the local cemetery. There were no traces of blood and therefore, it is still unrevealed how the deaths had occurred. The three teenagers were known to be “close friends” said a friend who knew them all. “They would always hang out together and have good jokes...”

Family members have been constantly asking for reasoning for their children´s death however, it seems like the truth behind this death still remains unknown...

Me editing the images onto the newspaper.
The newspaper without the photographs
Initinally the newspaper had no images, because this website doesn't allow us to add any when creating the article. However the most important part in this case, isn't the writting but the photos of the victims which will allow our audience to recognise them when Rebecca begins to watch the DVD and notice that something isn't quite right about them being in that DVD. So we had to place the photos of the actors on top of Anika's part of the article, since by placing it there, the article would still make sense to those who try to read it.

After finally finishing the newspaper article, we printed it out and clued it on top of a real newspaper, so that it would look more realistic.
The final newspaper

Making of the Storyboard

Anika drawing the shots.
Me writing the type of sound and
camera angle used in the shot.
Since making a storyboard requires a lot of time as it involves drawing each individual shot and identifying the sounds and camera techniques used, we have decided to split the scenes between us. I volunteered to do scene 1,2 and 5 and my partner Anika held the responsibility of creating  the story boards for scenes 3 and 4.
This is one of the pages I drew for our film, before writing the sounds and camera shots within each frame.

LOCATION: Visiting the two Cemeteries Nearby.

Today me and my partner Anika decided to visit both of the cemeteries around our area, in order to see which one of them was most suitable for our movie.

The first cemetery is the one in the church next to our 6th form building.

Pros:
- The structure of the church looks very old which helps to create an eerie atmosphere in the cemetery. This means that if we need a creepy looking abandoned building in our film we can use this to create the effect.

Cons:
-This cemetery is very small since its for the church and there isn't many trees around. This causes it to be very hard to shoot in the cemetery without getting the buildings surrounding the graveyard in the shot.
-The cemetery is near a road where cars go by frequently. This may result in our microphone picking up the sound of cars which we don't want since we want it to seem as if Rebecca is lost in the middle of nowhere, where not even cars can be heard.
-Since there is a church in this cemetery, there are many cars that are frequently parked here. However our film is located in a deserted location so we will need to try and film when there are no cars around.

The second cemetery is the Tower Hamlets cemetery park.

Cemetery 2 - slideshow

Pros:
- The cemetery park covers a very large area which provides us with more choices of possible filming locations within the cemetery.
-There is a lot of vegetation throughout the cemetery which helps to camouflage the buildings surrounding it, creating this idea of being in the middle of nowhere, isolated, which would be very effective in my film.
-There are various old, broken, fallen and moldy tomb stones scattered around the cemetery since it is a very old place. This helps to create an eerie atmosphere without the need of using a smoke machine, which provides the film with an ideal scary filming location.

Cons:
-There are a lot of hidden holes in the ground throughout the cemetery. This might mean that in order to preserve the safety of the actors in my film, it will be better for the filming to take place only in the trails rather then in the grassy areas, since the holes and old opened and broken tombs are camouflaged.
-The cemetery park is very large and some areas are almost deserted. This means that we should try to film when it is still day time and in  places where there is more people around, in order to prevent any of our film crew from being put in a situation of risk.

Overall we have decided to film our movie in the Tower Hamlets cemetery park because it is a more appropriate location for our movie to take place. In this visit we also had a chance to talk with the caretaker who gave us the following leaflet with his contact details in case we need to ask him anything.
